NO. 13: LIKE THE PHOENIX Sung by Sara
Another “universal symbol” in human cultures is “The Phoenix,” a metaphor for the capacity of humans to rise from “the ashes,” to become, once again, whole. In this song, “Like the Phoenix,” Sara/Humanity’s Child likens herself to that mythical creature and in doing so, encourages others to do the same. “So, I rise, my Spirit burning; oh, how the fire now lifts me. Now I know my mission is not completed; again, I’ll say, I will not be defeated.”
NO. 14: I WILL NEVER, EVER LEAVE YOU Sung by Sara, Vox and Humanity’s Cousins
Taken literally, this is in the category of the unrealistic promises made to children described in the
opening song,
“I’m Afraid.” But this is not a literal art, and so this song functions more in the realm of beliefs. When a loved-one dies, is she/he gone from our consciousness? For those of us who have lost a
child, I can tell you with certainty- our child is always with us. And, in our way, we who eternally grieve say to our child, “I will never, ever leave you!”
